    Spring Master Class April 30 - May 4, 2007

Hey everyone, the Spring Master Class is right around the corner. The dates are April 30 thru May 4, 2007 and we still have seats available. The class always receives wonderful reviews from all that attend. We spend the first 2 days shooting at several locations throughout the area - and you get a CD of the best images.

The next 3 days are spent on Photoshop speed techniques, workflow, album design, inkjet printing, selling, marketing, and profit building. All together, the week included about 50 hours of photography, good food, and making great friends. Remember, if you have been to a previous class or the 2nd person attending from the same studio, you can attend for only $695, that's $100 off the already great price of only $795. Check the link below for all the info. Hope to see you there!

By the way, this is not springtime in Cincy. This image is of the whole gang at the first ever Winter Master Class - just a little chilly - but a good time nevertheless.

    David at Colorado Workshops
Can't make it to the Cincinnati workshop - well, we are taking it on the road. That's right, from May 20 - 25; you can catch the entire weeklong class in beautiful Breckenridge, CO. Boy! Talk about Location! Location! Location! - It should be a real "kick" for a class in the Rockies. Check out they're web site at the link below.

Saving the Background - Photoshop Tutorial
Okay everybody; here is the first Photoshop tutorial promised in the last newsletter. They were originally planned to be 5 - 10 minutes quick tips. Well, that went "out the window" pretty quick. This first lesson is a bit over 20 minutes long. After you click on the link, give it about 30 seconds to start loading then all should play just fine.

I received the lesson's image from a photographer who asked me what they could do to save the image. The background was very dark and completely lacking in detail. The exposure on the bride was fine, but everything else got progressively darker from there.

I think you will find a lot of good information in the lesson. We will try to keep these coming on a monthly basis for starters. If you have an image that we could discuss in upcoming issues, please send them on to me for review and your permission to feature them in the newsletters. I promise anonymity to the maker.

Remember the tutorial needs about 30 seconds to load before it begins.

Lots of Pics - Lots of Info
We had a great group of photographers at the Winter Master Class. They hailed from Barbados, Phoenix, San Francisco, Hawaii, and throughout the Midwest. We only had one "little" surprise for the week - the WORST ice storm the city had seen in years - boy, were our fair weather attendees surprised. The weather never deterred us one bit. We still visited several gorgeous locations and got some really nice images that everyone got to take back home with them.

Now here is the really good part. I put my favorite images together in a slide presentation. But, it's more than just "pretty pictures". Each image is presented with all the pertinent EXIF data as well. Take a peek at the show, pause it at any time to view the exposure info, etc. You now have a terrific resource of image information too. Hope you like it - let me know. Just click the link below to view the show.

Give this show a few seconds to load too.

    Better Digital Tungsten Light Balance
Are you all happy with your tungsten white balance for you wedding ceremony images? I'm a guy who likes to set my "white balance" to what the actual scene is - Sunny pic at the sunny setting; Flash pics at the flash setting; etc.

This worked quite well till I get to those available light "ceremony" pics - they just always looked to warm to me at the "tungsten" setting. Canon's "tungsten" setting defaults to 3200 K, white is actually the color temperature of a tungsten photoflood bulb. Doing a custom white balance made the images look too cool to me.

Here is how I fixed it on my Canon 30D and 5D. Hit the "MENU" button and scroll down to the "Color temp." setting. It defaults to 5600 K. Reset it to 2800 K. After doing so, set your camera's Color balance to the "K" setting the next time you find yourself in a "tungsten" situation. You will find the color temperature much more pleasing and balanced.

    Next 3 Customer Service Commandments
    1. Make customers feel important and appreciated. Treat them as individuals. Always use their names and find ways to compliment them, but be sincere. People value sincerity. It creates good feeling and trust. Think about ways to generate good feelings from doing business with us. Customers are very sensitive and know whether or not you really care about them. Thank them every chance you get!!

    2. Help customers understand our systems. We may have in place the best operating systems for getting things done, but if our customers don't understand them, they get confused, impatient and angry. Take time to explain how our systems work and how they simplify our processes.

    3. Appreciate the power of "YES". Always look for ways to help our customers. When they have a request, (as long as it is reasonable) tell them we can do it. Figure out how afterwards. Look for ways to make doing business with you easy. Always do what you say you are going to do.

    See you next month! --David
