  • Hi Everyone,

HOT NEWS FOR 2007!!! First off, we are planning to move this newsletter to a monthly publication. Each issue will have at least 3 articles that cover photography, marketing, digital design, and/or Photoshop techniques.

MORE HOT!!! NEWS - the plan is to also have many of these lessons viewable and downloadable as QuickTime instructional videos. I love what Scott Kelby and the Photoshop Guys do with Photoshop TV, so we are going to give it a go with photography. We just shot the first lesson this week. Send me your lesson ideas too. I'll keep you posted on how to view them in February's newsletter.

DIGITAL WAKEUP CALL 2006 - RECAP!

WOW! What a year 2006 was. The 47 city Digital WakeUp Call tour coupled with one of our busiest studio years made it quite a year to remember. By the time December rolled around, LaDawn and I were pretty "pooped" out. We visited with nearly 9000 photographers around the country last year. Thank you to everyone who supported the tour with their sponsorship, attendence, and great feedback!

The Digital WakeUp Call tour was quite a kick. Most of the tour was done driving and we enjoyed the beauty of this great country of ours. We spent quite a bit of time listening to books on tape - David McCullough was one of our favorites. He has a wonderful collection of books about our country's history. After listening to the many enjoyable hours as we did, I kind of feel LaDawn and I could get our degrees in American history.

But the real treat was the people we met along the way - hearing their stories, sharing ideas, seeing their excitment for photography, feeling their enthusiasm for the program - it was Great!

It was very cool in another way, too. We had one of our best years ever in 2006. I attribute this to following exactly what we covered in the tour - That includes the photography, album design, and sales and marketing content of the seminar. Success is still based on "The Difference Making the Difference", great workflow and solid marketing. Anybody interested in the new 2-DVD extended edition set of the Digital WakeUp Call tour and BONUS pack is invited to check out the link below for more information.

Going Over to the Dark Side
I know, I know - many of you will say I finally "saw the light." Yep - I finally did it! I bought a MAC. I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I just fired the thing up January 12, so I'm still pretty much a "newby" on it. I used it for the first time at the PICTage booth at the PPA convention - David Jay helped me get it working with the large PICTage monitor. This was the first time we had met - a very nice guy and great photographer.

Well, here is the scoop on why I got it. I've always said, "... always get the right tool for the job." The Windows world has some "drop dead" killer apps for photogs out there, and I wanted to see what the MAC side had to offer - I'll keep you posted and/or feel free to email me with some of your best apps for the MAC.

Here's the plan - I want the best of both worlds so I'm setting my Mac Book Pro to run Windows too. I was going to install Apple's Boot Camp but installed Parallels instead - I was intrigued by some of Parallels new features - I installed RC 3120. The installation of Parallels and Windows was a "piece of cake". This is all very "cool" the way they co-exist on the same machine. No problems with any Windows applications yet.

OK - what about the additional cost for Windows. Well, I would recommend Windows XP home for starters. It's fairly inexpensive at Sam's Club - only $99.00 for the full version. I also have seen it very reasonably priced on-line. I don't want to get into a debate on XP Pro vs. XP Home. I think for the application XP Home will work fine and doesn't break the bank. I'll give you an update next month.

First Winter Digital Master Class - Seats Still Available
Hey everyone, we are right around the corner to presenting our first ever Winter Digital Master Class - February 12 - 16, 2007 in Cincinnati, OH area. There are still seats left, so this may be a wonderful opportunity for those of you who prefer a smaller hands on class.

Heck with the weather, as warm as it has been in Cincinnati this year, we will probably still get some outside shooting opportunities. But, if it's a bit too cold we've got some great indoor venues scheduled.

Two of the highlights for me are the Wine and Cheese party on Tuesday eve and the Gourmet Dinner on Thursday. Wow - Over 40 hours of "eating, sleeping, and breathing photography, Photoshop, digital design, marketing and sales. We hope to see you there. Give Susan a call at 800.292.2994 to register. Please check out the link below for further info on the Winter and Spring Master Classes.

    Report from PPA National Convention
We just got back from the Professional Photographers of America - PPA Convention in the icy city of San Antonio, Texas. WOW! It was their biggest convention ever. On a personal note, it was a thrill to see my friend, Ralph Romaguera from New Orleans, receive his American Society of Photography - ASP Fellowship degree. This is one of the highest photographic honors one can receive in this profession. Only 98 photographers worldwide have been bestowed with this honor. What a beautiful set of images he submitted. Way to go Ralph! Check out Ralph's website in the "Quick Links" section at the end of the newsletter.

There were several new and exciting things to see at the trade show. One of my favorites was from Blurb.com. They make the best bound book I have ever seen - from jacket cover, binding, web Interface - all make it a breeze to get up and running in no time. Books are available in 8x10, 7x7, and 11x13 horizontal or vertical. The 7x7 and 11x13 are brand new and may not on their website yet. And get this - 40 pages in a hard cover book with dust jacket - only $29.95. We brought back a few samples - they look as good as any bookstore book. Check out "Quick Links" below for more info.

Another great bargain we found at the show was Neil Enterprises new "peel and stick" books. You won't believe this - 8x10 to hold 20 prints - $12, 4x6 to hold 10 prints - $6 - plus many more sizes. These would make great promo books, Inexpensive add-on albums, and vendor books - very good quality, great price. Check out "Quick Links" below for more info.

First 3 Commandments of Customer Service
Actually there are 10 Commandments of Customer Service but we are starting with the first three this month. Look for the next 3 in February.

    1. Know who is boss. We are in a business to service customer's needs, and we can only do that by knowing what our customers want. When you truly listen to your customers, they will let us know what they want and how to provide great service. Never forget that the customer pays our salary and makes our job possible.

    2. Be a good listener. Take the time to identify customer needs by asking questions and concentrating on what the customer is really saying. Listen to their tone of voice, body language, and most importantly, how they feel. Beware of making assumptions---- thinking you intuitively know what the customer wants.

    3. Identify and anticipate needs. Customers don't buy products or services. They buy good solutions to problems. Most customer needs are emotional rather than logical. The more you know your customers, the better you become at anticipating their need. Communicate regularly so that you are aware of upcoming problems or needs.
