  • Hi Everyone,

I hope your new year is off to a great start! But I hear many photographers in our industry have had their ups and downs this past year. Many photographers I have visited with were talking about how much business is down. Everyone is asking, "Where have all the weddings gone?" One answer might be the fact that many of our potential clients are now hiring the new "emerging professional".

I love the term, but the reality of its implication is pretty scary. The "emerging pro", believe it or not, is "Uncle Harry and Cousin Mary!!!" Yep, the digital revolution - faster, cheaper, easier to use cameras - have turned Uncle Harry and Cousin Mary into pretty good digital photographers. I just took a phone order from a client who mentioned to me that she purchased a new Canon 20D. In her words, "You just can't take a bad picture with that camera." Pretty scary, isn't it? So, what are we to do? I believe it's still the difference that makes the difference. We need to differentiate our work from Uncle Harry and Cousin Mary, AND educate the buying public as to what those differences are. Check out the "Digital WakeUp Call" tour announcement for more info. This month I've also included a cool marketing tip that too might help.

DIGITAL WAKEUP CALL 2006 - Best Seminar Series of the Year

Uncle Harry and Cousin Mary are shooting more these days and we are enjoying it less. Wedding photography is looking pretty flat and one-dimensional. Labs are decrying the rapidly declining state of quality wedding photography coming through their doors. This seminar series does something about it. Four hours of the most needed digital information for the portrait and wedding photographer ever presented.

The "Digital WakeUp Call" tour does not attempt to razzle-dazzle you with complicated digital workflow solutions, PhotoShop esoterica, or frustrating new software solutions that you will never use.

This tour is about making your photography better, your Photoshop experiences easier, studio inkjet printing a possibility, and solid marketing ideas that can truly transform and grow your business and your bank account. Here's a little footnote: The ideas I am going to be presenting were used extensively in my studio for all of 2005. The result: we had our best year ever, AND we were 85% booked as we rolled into 2006! This stuff works! Hit the link below to get all the info.

    Under-exposure: "Speed Tweak" Fix
We lighten, we darken, we burn, and we dodge, to get that print just right. Wouldn't it be cool to do it all in one step? Here is an idea we came up with at my studio to "speed tweak" our digital workflow. The first image shows the bride and groom coming down the aisle. The bride and groom are underexposed, while the foreground pews are about right. How can we easily even out the density throughout the whole scene most efficiently?

Here is the trick. Duplicate the image onto another layer, change the duplicated layer property to "screen" mode. The bride and groom are looking pretty good now, but we blew out the foreground pews and background. The fix - add a layer mask by hitting the layer mask button at the bottom of the layers pallet. Now, simply "paint" with the black brush on the layer mask to return the pews to their original correct exposure, then work the other areas, such as brightly lit backgrounds to the desired density by varying the brush opacity.

Remember, if you make a mistake, just paint over it with the "white" brush. The whole process is non- destructive so it's a great alternative to the regular burn-dodge tools. Check out the second image for the final result. These kinds of quick tips are covered in our Digital Master Class - see next article.

Viral Marketing - with No Nasty Viruses!
It sounds sinister, doesn't it? Well, it really isn't. It's great "word of mouth" advertising via e-mail. Here is what we do. We design a great looking image collage with our LumaPix:FotoFusion software and use the software's internal e-mailing functionality to e-mail the collage of a recent event to all of our "vendor buddies" - the wedding consultant, the florist, the baker, the caterer, etc. - which were involved in the event. The collage always includes our studio name, phone number, and web address.

They are happy to receive the e-mailed collage of images because it becomes a great marketing device for them to share services visually with their potential customers. We encourage them to forward it on to any future inquiries they may receive in the coming months. We even take the time to show them how to set up the e-mail software - i.e., MS Outlook - to hold these e-mails, sorted by their most useful criteria, so they can easily forward the appropriate collage to their potential client.

Did I mention that our studio name, phone, and web address accompany each collage? Think about the power of this simple marketing idea. If we shoot 25 weddings in a year and send 5 vendors our collages from each wedding who then forward them to only 10 of their new inquiries, that's your studio name and images reaching 1250 potential new clients with very little effort. Great potential here gang.

Have a great season. See you at the Digital WakeUp Call Tour, David
