Hi Everyone,
Hi everyone. It's been a few months since the last newsletter, but a
lot of exciting things have been happening around here these last few
months - wedding preparations mostly.
The big news is that I was married on July 31, 2005 to a beautiful
woman by the name of LaDawn. Wow! It's really different when you are on
the same side of the wedding preparations as your clients. It was an
eye-opening, fun, life learning experience for me, especially as a
wedding photographer. I'll share some of the lessons learned in an
upcoming article. By the way you can meet LaDawn near the end of this
newsletter.
HOT NEWS for David's Fall Digital Workshop - September 26 -30, 2005 We continue to get "RAVE" reviews for the best priced (only
$595) digital workshop being offered anywhere in the country from all
who attend. We have made several changes to the 2005 Fall workshop. The
biggest request has been to add more photography to the class - the
class will now feature two days and one evening of digital photography.
On Tuesday evening you are invited to a wine and cheese party at my
studio. On Wednesday, John Wright, of EStudioResources, is sponsoring a
Pizza Party, and on Thursday, dinner back at the Ziser's with, yours
truly, covering the Barbeque chores. We all hope to see you there!
The extended photography learning sessions will include the secrets
of great studio lighting executed with simplicity, flare and elegance.
We will also cover sensible, sensitive posing - posing that is natural,
realistic, and "client friendly". The class will also cover
beautiful natural light and window light techniques. The highlight of
the lighting and posing will culminate in how to create dramatic,
exciting, head-turing images that sell - images that will substantially
raise the profile of your studio above the crowd.
A big part of the workshop this fall will be heavy emphasis on
increasing your sales to your clients, and substantially increasing your
"bottom line." We will also show how to create "vendor
buzz" with your fellow vendors in your area, and also build a very
strong studio presence in your community. The methods presented in our
Fall workshop have added $1000's of dollars of profits for studios that
have adopted these techniques and ideas! You will see an increase
immediately upon their implementation.
And lastly, The David A. Ziser Fall Workshop is PPA merited this time
around. Our class is now part of PPA "Continuing Education"
program and all PPA members attending will receive a "Continuing
Education" merit. The Ameri-Suites hotel is giving us great rates
of only $69/room with a wonderful breakfast included. The week,
September 26 - 30, 2005 is a great opportunity for learning,
camaraderie, food and fun - and only $595. Call Susan at 800-292- 2994
right away to reserve you seat!

Higher
Sync Speeds for External Flashes. |
 |
Our new digital domain is quite the new fun filled playground
for many of us these days. But have any of you longed for the
really fast shutter sync speeds of the old leaf shutter
Hasselblads of a few years past? A minor "irratation for me
as we switched to digital was giving up my 1/500sec sync speed
on my trusty Hassy.
Even the Nikon D1X offered a 1/500sec sync speed when it came
out, but all that has changed with the new gerenations of
cameras hitting the market these days. It seems about the
fastest we get these days, without turning to the manufactures'
dedicated flash units is about 1/250 sec. That may be fine for
most jobs, but for a wedding guy like me, it's just too slow on
a sunny Saturday afternoon in June. I still need a way to soften
the background with a little wider aperture necessitating a
higher shutter speed to compensate for the wider aperture. How
do you do it with the new cameras on the market?
Here is the trick. Check out the image accompanying the
workshop announcement. The image was taken at ISO 100 with my
Quantum Q-Flash set to full power. The image was taken with my
70-200mm f2.8 IS lens mounted on my Canon 20D. Now here is the
big news - the shutter speed was set to 1/400 sec. How did he do
that you ask when the Canon only syncs to 1/250 sec.
Well, here is the big secret. I synced 2/3's of the image to
1/400 sec. Tha bottom 1/3 received no flash at all since the
shutter curtain was covering it. The ratio of the flash exposure
to the ambient was about 1 1/2 stops so there is not a great
density difference to be seen, and the really "cool"
part is that the shutter curtain casts it's soft shadow of the
image sensor thereby creating a very soft, well disguised light
fall on the image giving the net effect of a gentle, enhancing
vignette on the image. We will cover a lot more of these
interesting digital techniques at the workshop. Hope to see you
there.

My
New Bride - LaDawn |
 |
What does one say about the love of their life? Well, LaDawn and
I have known each other and have been good friends for many
years. But sometimes fate, providence, and the will of God can
orchestrate different events in a person's life. That's what
happened to the both of us.
The series of twists and turns of events in our lives
eventually brought us together about 4 years ago. The dating
started, the feelings grew, and those feelings culminated in us
celebrating our wonderful wedding July 31, 2005 amist 240
affirming family and friends.
It was a great celebration for all. Yes, there were many
photogs present capturing the festivities. We are so far up to
over 4000 images with many more to come. We will give you a peek
next time around.
